Coastal Catchment Initiative (CCI)
In 1995 the international community agreed to the non-binding Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA). The Coastal Catchments Initiative (CCI) was designed as part of an Australian Government effort to achieve targeted reductions in pollution discharges to coastal water quality ‘hot spots’.
The Townsville region is considered to be one of the hot spots as water from urban, peri-urban and rural catchments flows into the marine waters of the Great Barrier Reef, one of Australia’s national icons.
Commencing in 2006, Creek to Coral managed the delivery of the Townsville CCI project, with funding provided by the Australian Government at that time. One of the main tasks of the Townsville CCI project was the preparation of a Water Quality Improvement Plan (WQIP) for the Black River and Ross River Basins (Australian Water Resource Council (AWR) basins) and Magnetic Island.
